European man convicted in Dubai for embezzling AED 600,000 from doctor

A European man has been sentenced in absentia by the Dubai Misdemeanor Court to one month in jail, followed by deportation, and ordered to pay a fine of AED 600,000 after being found guilty of embezzling the same amount from an Arab female doctor.

According to a Gulf Today report, the case dates back to May of last year when the doctor filed a complaint alleging that the man defrauded her during a proposed business partnership to establish a multi-specialty medical center.

According to case files, the doctor met the man during a medical conference in Dubai, where he convinced her to invest AED 600,000 in a medical project that, he claimed, would cost AED 7 million in total. He assured her that he was working with other partners and presented a promising proposal backed by a power of attorney.

The doctor said she initially transferred AED 400,000, followed by another AED 200,000, to the man’s bank account, trusting that the remaining amount would be paid once official licensing was secured. However, she later realized the man had no intention of honoring the agreement. He avoided communication, failed to start the project, and refused to return the funds.

Investigations revealed that the money was transferred to his personal account and misused, with authorities confirming the fraudulent act through bank records and other evidence. The court concluded that the man had abused the power of attorney and committed a breach of trust.
