The UAE has begun successfully testing advanced biometric identification systems that could eventually replace the need for physical Emirates ID cards, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) confirmed.
These new systems use facial recognition and artificial intelligence, accessible through the Authority’s smart application, to verify identity without the need for a physical card. The innovation is part of a larger push toward digital transformation across sectors such as banking, healthcare, hospitality, and telecommunications.
“Digital identity is not just a tool — it’s a gateway to better services, stronger security, and greater convenience for everyone,” the Authority said in a statement issued in response to a Federal National Council inquiry.
The biometric rollout, which began with basic services, is now entering more complex areas. Full implementation across all sectors is expected within a year. The ICP noted that the transition adheres to national data protection and risk management standards.
To support its digital shift, the Authority launched a campaign in August 2024 dubbed “The Month of Eliminating Government Bureaucracy.” The initiative invited residents and government employees to help identify inefficient procedures through outreach programs in malls, majlis gatherings, and service centres.
As part of the campaign, the Bureaucracy Elimination Award was introduced to encourage innovative ideas aimed at improving government services.
With the integration of biometric IDs and its continued push to streamline bureaucracy, the ICP said it remains committed to cementing the UAE’s position as a global leader in digital governance.
