13-month-old baby receives Dubai’s first liver transplant at King’s College Hospital

In a groundbreaking medical feat, a 13-month-old infant has become the first patient to undergo a successful liver transplant in Dubai, thanks to the efforts of King’s College Hospital London and the support of Al Jalila Foundation.

The baby, Malek, was diagnosed with biliary atresia — a rare liver condition — as well as a congenital heart defect known as an atrial septal defect. Despite an earlier operation to connect his liver to his intestines, his health continued to decline.

Following a heart surgery to correct the defect, Malek was referred to King’s College Hospital in Dubai by Al Jalila Children’s Hospital. His father donated a portion of his liver for the transplant, which was led by renowned liver transplant expert Professor Mohamed Rela and carried out by a multidisciplinary team.

Al Jalila Foundation fully funded the procedure, covering both pre- and post-operative care, while Al Jalila Children’s Hospital also provided medical support to the child and his father.

Dr. Younis Kazim, Acting CEO of the Health Regulation Sector at the Dubai Health Authority, hailed the milestone: “The successful liver transplant for a 13-month-old infant represents an unprecedented medical achievement for Dubai. It reflects the healthcare system’s readiness and ability to handle the most complex cases with efficiency and professionalism in a dynamic environment that fosters excellence and supports high-value healthcare investments.”
