Sharjah offers waiver on decade-old traffic fines under new directive

Sharjah Police have confirmed that over 600,000 traffic violations dating back more than a decade are now eligible for cancellation—provided certain conditions are met—under a new initiative aimed at clearing long-standing fines and expired vehicle registrations.

The decision, issued by the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC), allows motorists to apply for the waiver through the Traffic and Licensing Services Center. The move is part of the emirate’s broader push to ease financial burdens on residents and promote safer roads.

Colonel Mohammad Alay Al Naqbi, Director General of the Traffic and Patrol Department, explained the terms of eligibility, noting that applicants must pay a Dh1,000 processing fee unless special circumstances apply.

“There are genuine cases where people have been unable to return to the UAE or unfortunately passed away, and we take that into account,” Col. Al Naqbi said in a Gulf News report. He added that exemptions will apply to vehicle owners who have died, those who have lived abroad for more than 10 consecutive years, or vehicles that were abandoned and remain unclaimed.

In addition, motorists with fines amounting to less than Dh1,000 may also be exempted from the processing fee.

The SEC’s decision, which applies to violations recorded prior to April 2015, was passed during a recent meeting chaired by Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the Council.

Sharjah Police emphasized that traffic fines are tied to the individual’s traffic record, not just a single vehicle, and that outstanding violations must be cleared before any new registration or renewal can take place.

“Violations are linked to the individual’s traffic file, not just a specific vehicle. All outstanding fines must be resolved first,” Col. Al Naqbi reiterated.

The initiative is intended to support motorists and improve compliance. “This is a good opportunity for people to resolve old issues and move forward,” Col. Al Naqbi said.
