Fishermen in Abu Dhabi caught using banned nylon nets, face stiff penalties

A group of fishermen in Abu Dhabi has been slapped with environmental violations after being caught using illegal nylon fishing nets along the emirate’s coast, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) confirmed.

The use of such nets is strictly prohibited in the UAE due to their harmful impact on marine biodiversity. Nylon nets can trap non-target species such as turtles and juvenile fish, contributing to overfishing and threatening marine ecosystems.

Under UAE law, violators may face a minimum of three months in prison and fines between Dh25,000 and Dh50,000. Repeat offenders can be jailed for at least one year and fined up to Dh100,000. Confiscation of fishing tools and boats involved in the violation is also mandated.

The EAD stressed that illegal fishing practices undermine ongoing efforts to protect fish stocks and marine life. Officials reiterated their call for fishermen to comply with Federal Law No. (23) of 1999 and use sustainable methods to help preserve the environment for future generations.
