Eight fish retailers in Abu Dhabi have been flagged by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) for selling the Longtail Silver Biddy, or Badah, during its protected breeding period.
The agency announced the violations on Instagram, emphasizing that the fish, considered a commercially important species, is currently under a seasonal ban to safeguard its reproduction cycle. Selling or displaying it during this time violates environmental rules aimed at conserving marine biodiversity and ensuring long-term sustainability of the emirate’s fish stocks.
“These actions go against existing environmental laws that are designed to protect our natural resources,” the agency noted, stressing the broader goal of maintaining ecological balance.
EAD has put in place strict measures to regulate fisheries in Abu Dhabi, and urged those in the fishing and seafood trade to comply with the law. The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting marine life and called on businesses to help preserve resources “for the benefit of future generations.”
