The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) are providing extensive assistance to OFW Danmark Masongsong and his family following the tragic death of his daughter, Malia Kates Yuchen, in a car accident at NAIA Terminal 1 on May 4, 2025.
Malia was laid to rest at Eternal Gardens in Lipa City, Batangas, on May 11, with her parents, Danmark and Cynthia Masongsong, mourning alongside family and friends. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac shared updates on the family’s condition during a recent press briefing, emphasizing the government’s continued presence in their time of need.
“Right now, Cynthia Masongsong is still recovering from her surgery. Although her condition has improved, she needs ongoing medical care and follow-up consultations,” Secretary Cacdac said. The DMW chief also confirmed that Danmark’s mother, Nanay Edith, is making progress in her recovery.
Understanding the emotional toll on the family, Secretary Cacdac ensured a dedicated team of nurses and social workers is supporting the Masongsongs, offering continuous psychosocial counseling. He also noted that both a Catholic priest and a pastor have been providing spiritual guidance to OFW Danmark upon his request.
From the outset, the DMW and OWWA have been actively present, coordinating with the New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC) to cover essential logistics, including accommodation for the family, transportation of Malia’s remains, and other immediate needs.
Secretary Cacdac further assured that the government’s support does not end here. “We will give him space and time, and we will speak with him regarding his plans for future employment and livelihood,” he stated, highlighting plans for reintegration support when Danmark is ready.
