Abu Dhabi authorities have intensified efforts to curb residential overcrowding through their ongoing campaign, Your Home, Your Responsibility, with violators now facing penalties as high as AED 1 million.
Led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), the initiative aims to enforce safe and regulated living conditions across the emirate. Municipal inspectors are currently conducting inspections in densely populated areas to ensure compliance with the city’s occupancy laws.
While the primary goal of the campaign is educational, officials have warned that failure to address violations may lead to steep fines, starting from AED 5,000 and escalating up to AED 1 million in severe cases. The DMT underscored that these measures are designed to preserve public safety, maintain moral standards, and improve the overall quality of life in Abu Dhabi.
Overcrowding is defined as housing more individuals in a unit than what it was designed for, compromising safety, hygiene, and the well-being of nearby residents. Authorities also emphasized the dangers of sub-leasing and urged tenants to rent only from properties registered under the Tawtheeq system and follow parking rules under the Mawaqif scheme.
The campaign aligns with the objectives of the Year of the Community 2025, promoting social cohesion by calling on property owners, landlords, and tenants to adhere to occupancy regulations. Labour accommodations must also be placed in appropriate zones, separate from family-oriented neighborhoods.
Residents are encouraged to report violations through the TAMM platform to help uphold safe and dignified community living.
