Sharjah rolls out smart traffic signals to ease congestion and cut emissions

Sharjah has introduced a new wave of intelligent traffic signals that adapt to real-time traffic flow, aiming to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and support environmental sustainability.

As part of the emirate’s “Green Traffic” initiative, these smart signals use advanced sensors and detectors to monitor vehicle volumes and automatically adjust signal timings. This allows smoother travel through intersections — especially during peak hours — and enables cars to pass through several green lights without stopping, as long as they maintain a steady speed between 40 to 50 kmph.

The new system is designed not only to reduce frustrating wait times but also to minimize harmful emissions from frequent braking and idling, aligning with Sharjah’s broader sustainability targets.

Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), said the technology is a key element in the emirate’s ongoing efforts to enhance its transportation infrastructure. He emphasized that the system also improves pedestrian safety by regulating crossings more effectively.
