Man jailed and deported in Dubai for using stolen credit card in online purchases

A Dubai court has sentenced an Arab man to one month in jail, fined him Dh7,596, and ordered the confiscation of the device used in the crime after he was found guilty of illegally using a stolen credit card. He will also be deported following the completion of his sentence, Emarat Al Youm reported.

Prosecutors charged the man with unlawfully using debit or credit card data to obtain funds and accessing confidential financial information without permission. The court found enough evidence to convict him despite his denial of the accusations. The verdict was not appealed.

This case mirrors a similar incident from March involving an Asian doctor in Dubai whose credit card was used for 14 unauthorized transactions totaling over Dh120,000 while she was in surgery. She told Khaleej Times that she only found out about the theft after finishing the procedure—only to be held liable for the charges by her bank.

Cybersecurity specialists continue to raise alarms about the rising threat of digital fraud in the UAE, with some government agencies reportedly facing up to 50,000 cyberattacks per day. Victims of financial fraud often claim they receive little help from banks, and instead face debt collection pressure for charges they never authorized.

As digital payment methods surge in popularity, experts urge the public to stay vigilant by enabling account alerts and reporting suspicious transactions immediately.
