Government employees across Dubai will enjoy a long weekend starting Friday, June 27, as the city marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, or Hijri year 1447 AH.
The official announcement confirms that all federal and local government departments, institutions, and entities will observe the holiday. However, exemptions will apply to essential services and those operating on shift-based schedules, who will continue to work based on operational needs to ensure continuity.
The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) confirmed that the three-day weekend will conclude on Sunday, June 29, with regular working hours resuming Monday, June 30.
This declaration aligns with the nationwide holiday schedule previously approved by the UAE Cabinet. The Hijri New Year follows closely on the heels of the Eid Al Adha break, giving many residents another opportunity to unwind.
Private sector workers will also benefit from the official holiday, as the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) earlier confirmed June 27 as a paid day off for non-government employees.
The Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, and Muharram marks its first month—ushering in a new year for the Muslim community.
