Dubai installs smart pedestrian signals at 10 more sites to boost safety

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the second phase of its Smart Pedestrian Signal Expansion Project, bringing the total number of intersections fitted with intelligent pedestrian systems across the city to 27.

The latest rollout saw the installation of smart signals at 10 key locations, including intersections along Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Al Satwa Street, Salah Al Din Street, Amman Street, Al Qusais Street near labour camps, and in front of a school zone on Oud Metha Street.

Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said the initiative has already shown measurable improvements in pedestrian safety. “Results have shown improved safety levels at these pedestrian crossings since the signals became operational,” he noted, emphasizing the system’s role in reducing risk and enhancing mobility for all.

These smart signals use thermal imaging cameras that detect pedestrian movement both on the sidewalk and while crossing — even at night. Integrated push-button devices allow the system to register actual crossing requests, helping fine-tune signal timing based on real-time data.

Al Ali highlighted the adaptive nature of the system: “The smart signals are equipped with dynamic sensors that automatically adjust signal timings in real-time based on pedestrian speed.” He explained that this feature supports safer crossings for children, elderly individuals, and People of Determination, while also easing vehicle congestion by minimizing unnecessary stops.

When selecting new locations, the RTA uses a comprehensive evaluation system that considers pedestrian accident rates, road classification, traffic volume, and the presence of alternative crossings like footbridges. The goal, Al Ali added, is to ensure that each installation has a meaningful impact on public safety and road efficiency.
