Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize by Republican Representative Buddy Carter, who credited him with helping end the recent conflict between Israel and Iran and curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
Carter described Trump’s involvement as “extraordinary and historic,” in a letter sent to the Nobel Committee, according to a report from Fox News. The congressman claimed Trump was key in halting what he called “the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism” from acquiring “the most lethal weapon on the planet.”
The ceasefire followed nearly two weeks of escalating violence, which began when Israel launched a preemptive strike targeting Iran’s suspected nuclear developments. The conflict intensified as Iran fired back and the U.S. conducted airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. On Monday, Iran retaliated by firing rockets at a U.S. airbase in Qatar, but advanced warnings helped avoid any casualties.
Trump had earlier announced that the conflict—referred to as the “12-Day War”—would come to an end, with a ceasefire taking effect Tuesday night. Representative Carter hailed Trump’s ability to help secure a rapid resolution that many thought was out of reach.
“President Trump’s influence was instrumental in forging a swift agreement that many believed to be impossible,” Carter said in his nomination. He also lauded Trump’s leadership for embodying the Nobel Peace Prize’s core principles: “the pursuit of peace, the prevention of war, and the advancement of international harmony.”
Trump celebrated the nomination by posting a screenshot of the Fox News report and Carter’s letter on his platform, Truth Social.
This marks at least the second nomination Trump has received this year. Earlier, Representative Darrell Issa nominated him following his 2024 election victory, citing its worldwide implications.
The Nobel Prize committee has reportedly received 338 nominations for this year’s Peace Prize.
