Sheikh Mohammed steps in to fund life-saving treatment for Syrian girl battling rare illness

A Syrian family’s desperate plea for help has been answered with compassion from the highest level of leadership in the UAE.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has committed to covering the full cost of medical treatment for Yaqeen Ebrahim, a young Syrian girl diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy—a rare and life-threatening genetic disorder.

The act of generosity followed a viral video shared by Yaqeen’s uncle, where he made a heartfelt appeal for urgent assistance. In the video, he revealed the staggering cost of treatment—over Dh7 million—and said that only a few countries, including the UAE, could provide the necessary care, specifically naming Al Jalila Hospital in Dubai.

The family’s prayers were swiftly answered. “We were contacted directly by the office of His Highness,” said Ebrahim Kanakar, Yaqeen’s father, confirming that Sheikh Mohammed would shoulder the entire financial burden for his daughter’s care.

The move not only brings hope to Yaqeen’s family but also highlights the UAE leader’s enduring commitment to humanitarian causes, particularly those involving vulnerable children in need of urgent medical support.
