Dubai Police have sounded the alarm over rising fatalities caused by jaywalking and reckless e-scooter use, after 13 people were killed in the first five months of 2025 alone.
Of those, nine deaths were caused by people crossing roads outside designated pedestrian lanes, while four involved e-scooter riders using the vehicles in unsafe or unauthorized ways.
“These figures reflect the continued presence of dangerous practices that jeopardise lives,” said Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations at Dubai Police. He stressed that ignoring pedestrian rules and riding scooters without helmets or on unsuitable roads remain major safety concerns.
Between January and May 2025, Dubai Police recorded over 28,000 jaywalking violations and impounded more than 15,000 scooters for rule-breaking. Many of the scooter-related offences were due to underage riders, lack of safety gear, or use in prohibited zones.
Al Mazrouei warned that such violations don’t only endanger the individuals involved but also put other road users at risk and contribute to traffic problems.
In response, authorities have stepped up efforts to raise awareness. Dubai Police, in partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has launched educational campaigns urging residents and tourists to cross only at marked zones and follow legal guidelines for e-scooter use.
The public is encouraged to report dangerous behavior through the “Police Eye” service on the Dubai Police app or by calling the “We Are All Police” hotline at 901.
