‘Summer Without Accidents’ returns amid surge in deadly Dubai road incidents

As temperatures rise, so do traffic risks—prompting Dubai to relaunch its annual “Summer Without Accidents” campaign following a concerning spike in road incidents.

In 2024 alone, 2,285 traffic accidents occurred during the summer months, leaving 34 people dead and 43 others with serious injuries, according to figures released by Dubai Police. The number of summer road crashes has been consistently high over the past three years, with 2022 recording 5,285 accidents, followed by 4,595 in 2023 and 3,481 in 2024.

“This presents a real danger to road users and requires urgent cooperation from all sectors,” said Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations at Dubai Police, in a Khaleej Times report. He noted that the rise in accidents correlates with an increase in the number of vehicles and heightened travel during school breaks.

Authorities have identified speeding, poor vehicle upkeep, driver fatigue, and distractions behind the wheel as the top contributors to summer crashes. “We live in a time where vehicles and technology are advancing rapidly, but that comes with the responsibility to drive safely and avoid preventable tragedies,” Al Ghaithi added.

To curb fatalities, Dubai Police, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, RTA, and private sector partners, is launching educational outreach and joint inspections. Brigadier General Ahmed Al Sam Al Naqbi from the Federal Traffic Council highlighted the dangers of extreme heat, saying, “High temperatures increase the risk of tyre blowouts, vehicle fires, and loss of control, especially when cars are poorly maintained.”

The campaign, which runs until September 1, includes free 10-point vehicle safety checks at selected fuel stations across the UAE. These inspections cover tire pressure, brake systems, coolant levels, air conditioning, battery health, and more—crucial components for ensuring safe summer journeys.

Drivers are being reminded to stay vigilant, avoid speeding, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before traveling, particularly during long holiday drives.
